Presentation at the Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Literature Festival April 8th by Joy Hoerner Rich and Karen Tolley.
In 1966 Lena de Grummond wrote scores of letters to children’s book writers and illustrators asking them to consider donating materials to the University of Southern Mississippi as they sought to develop an important collection of work pertaining to children’s literature. Berta and Elmer Hader were the very first to respond by donating all of the original materials related to the book Ding Dong Bell. USM now has a magnificent collection housing the works of more than 1200 children’s book authors and artists including correspondence, book dummies, original artboards, and delightful miscellany. The de Grummond Gallery on the USM campus generally rotates items from their collection in their exhibit hall. Currently, and through October 2011, several hundred items on loan from the Hader Connection collection are on display at the de Grummond Gallery. The exhibit highlights their children’s book and magazine works and shows stages of creation on various pieces, plus the lovely end result.
